The Rivers State Governor, Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike announced the commencement of free bus services within some parts of the state from June 1, 2020. This announcement was seen in a Twitter post on Thursday.

Local Government areas to benefit from the free bus services include the following:

  • Port Harcourt
  • Obio-Akpor
  • Oyigbo
  • Eleme

The aim of this project as envisioned is to contain the spread of Covid-19 on citizens of the state.

The governor urged all residents to continue to maintain physical and social distancing in every space. This includes vehicles, bank premises and shopping places as required by the subsisting regulations.

It was also reported that the State Executive Council has approved a Free Bus Service with a fleet of 28 Luxury Buses to convey commuters free of charge during this COVID-19 period as stated by the Rivers State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Sunny Ejekwu.

He also confirmed that the scheme would commence from Monday, June 1, 2020 as part of the measures introduced by the government to alleviate the sufferings faced by those resident in the state.

The free bus service might just be what is needed to curb the clustering of passengers in vehicles to avoid the spread of the virus.

The Commissioner also stated that wearing of face-masks would be a compulsory requirement for any commuter who would want to enjoy the free service.
