Fire broke out at a section of the Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri the Imo state capital by 2:00pm on Monday, 8 March 2019.
The incident was confirmed by The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) through its General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu in a statement.
Cause of the fire is yet to be known as at the time of filing this report but Mr. Yakubu stated that the fire affected

“Some parts of the terminal building of Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri”.
According to her, the fire was however put out swiftly by officers of the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services Department of FAAN.

“There was no casualty and normal operations has since resumed at the airport”.
Futhermore, the Corporate Affairs GM revealed that FAAN has launched preliminary findings into the cause of the incident.
