Know your candidates: Alhaji Atiku Abubakar

Former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is a Nigerian politician and a business mogul. He served along side former president, Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999 to 2007.

Since his entry into politics in 1989, Atiku Abubakar has unsuccessfully contested five times for the Office of President of Nigeria. Alhaji contested in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019. In 1993, he contested the Social Democratic Party presidential primaries losing to Moshood Abiola and Baba Gana Kingibe. He was a presidential candidate of the Action Congress in the 2007 presidential election coming in third to Umaru Yar’Adua of the PDP and Muhammadu Buhari of the ANPP.

Atiku contested the presidential primaries of the People’s Democratic Party during the 2011 presidential election losing out to incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. In 2014, he joined the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2015 presidential election and contested the presidential primaries losing to Muhammadu Buhari. In 2017, he returned to the Peoples Democratic Party and was the party presidential candidate during the 2019 presidential election, again losing to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari. Atiku was born on the 25th of November in 1946 and is 75 years old. He was born in Jada, British Cameroon (modern day Adamawa state, Nigeria).

Atiku was born to a Fulani trader and farmer, Garba Abubakar and his mother was Aisha kande. He was named after his paternal grandfather, Atiku Abdulqadir who hails from wurno, sokoto state. The grandfather migrated to kojoli village at Jada, Adamawa state. In 1951, his father died as a result of drowning while crossing a river to toungo, a neighbouring village in Jada.

Abubakar schooled in Jada primary school, Adamawa. He was later admitted into Adamawa provincial school. Atiku graduated from secondary school in  1965  In 1967, He got admission to study law on a scholarship from the regional government. After graduation in 1969, he got employed by the Nigerian customary service.

In 2021, Atiku completed his master’s in international relations at the united kingdom.

Atiku has four wives and twenty eight children. In his words “I wanted to expand the Abubakar’s family. I felt extremely lonely as a child. I had no brother and no sister, I did not want my children to be as lonely as I was. My wives are my sisters, my friends, and my advisors and they complement one another.

Unfortunately, on Tuesday February 1st 2022, Jennifer Douglas (one of his wives) confirmed her divorce to Abubakar in a statement. According to her “our union broke due to disagreements over my continues stay in the united kingdom, amongst other long- standing issues we were having”.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s titles/Awards

Atiku Abubakar was given the chieftaincy title of Turaki of Adamawa by his future father-in-law’s traditional ruler, Alhaji Aliyu Mustala.

In June 2017, Abubakar was given the chieftaincy title of Waziri of Adamawa and his previous title, was transfered to his son Aliyu.

In 2011, the US peace corps honoured Abubakar with the Harris Wofford global  citizen award. In their words ” no private business man in Africa has worked harder for democracy or contributed more to the progress of higher education than Atiku”

Atiku Abubakar’s intentions for the 2023 Elections

After so much unsuccessful attempts for the presidential position, Atiku Abubakar yet again made intentions about joining the race for the presidential sear. Favour was on his side because in may 2022, he was chosen as the people’s democratic party candidate for the 2023 Nigerian elections. He has also chosen Ifeanyi Okowa, Governor of Delta state as his running mate for the coming election
