There are indications that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, may reschedule the Presidential and national assembly elections slated for Saturday 16, February 2019.
Though the Electoral umpire have not issued any statement regarding this notion but the commission is in a meeting with top stakeholders.
Reasons why the election may be postpone include:
(i) logistics challenges: following the burning of INEC offices in Abia, Anambra and Plateau states, INEC is faced with the glaring challenge of having lost electoral materials and equipment expected to be used in the states outlined above.
It is either the commission makes a quick move to replace damaged materials or postpone elections across those states.
(ii) delay in circulation of electoral materials: there are also reports that materials needed for the smooth conduct of elections across the 36 states of the federation have not been evenly distributed. Elections cannot be conducted without materials hence, this is another major reason the presidential and national assembly elections may be suspended for today.
We have confirmed that the election has been postponed from today Saturday 16, February 2019 to next week Saturday 21, February 2019.
