New passport; Nigerian Immigration suspends new passport application

Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended the receiving and processing of new passport applications in all passport offices all over the country till June 1st 2021.
The Comptroller General of Immigration Service, Muhammad Babandede announced the suspension of receiving and processing new passport during the decoration of NIS senior officers that was promoted. Babandede used this opportunity to announce this.
Why did Nigeria Immigration Service suspend Issuance of Passport? According to the statement by Sunday James the Service Public Relations Officer for Comptroller General of Immigration, said that the stopping of the passport processing is to clear the existing backlog at hand. According to the CG of the service, they want to use this time to clear every Passport application that was received before 17th of May 2021.
He added that Task Force will be sent to Passport offices to clear the backlog. The Nigeria Immigration Service is expecting the new passport regime to begin on the 1st of June 2021, for delivery period of 6 weeks from the date of submission of applications if all the documents submitted by the applicant is complete.
