Constitution review in Nigeria: Senate wants to review the 1999 Constitution – How will this involve you?



They will start with zonal public hearing for the six geopolitical zones later this month. This is to adjust the country’s law book, this was the statement of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution.Many people in the west African country argued the 1999 constitution of Nigeria is not working well.

The Public hearing will hold in the 12 state capitals simultaneously as centers. This means that two centers of each geopolitical zones will hold public hearing from Wednesday, 26th May to Thursday 27th May.

According to the statement signed by the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, the hearing procedures is open to the general public.  How this constitution review involves you. This involves everyone

Sixteen main issues to be addressed in this public hearing. This is were you are involved, to go and say your own mind and opinion concerning the following:

1. Gender Equality and Women Participation for government
2. The Federal Structure for governance and power sharing
3. Local Government autonomy
4. Revenue Allocation
5. Establishment of State Police
6. Justice reform for judiciary
7. Electoral reform
8. Socio-economic rights as it was written in Chapter II of the constitution
9. Residency and Indigeneship
10. Removal of immunity for criminal cases
12. How long it should take for the Passage of Appropriation Bill
13. State and Local government creation
14. Independence of Accountant General, Auditor General and Attorney General of the Federation
FCT Administration
15. How the Legislature operates
16. Constitutional roles for Traditional leaders

 

The Zonal Hearings will take place:

North Central
Jos Centre will represent Plateau, Nasarawa and Benue

Minna Centre – Nigeri, Kwara, Kogi and Abuja

North East
Bauchi Centre – Bauchi, Yobe and Borno

Gombe Centre – Gombe, Taraba and Adamawa

North West
Kaduna Centre – Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa and Katsina

Sokoto Centre – Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara

South East
Owerri Centre – Imo and Abia

Enugu Centre – Enugu, Ebonyi and Anambra

South South
Asaba Centre – Delta, Edo and Bayelsa

Port-Harcourt Centre – Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom

South West
Lagos Centre – Lagos Oyo and Ogun

Akure Centre – Ondo and Osun

Before this process began, many experts has said that it is restructuring that can solve this plenty confusion and trouble Nigeria is facing’.
