The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has reopened campaigns for political parties ahead of the elections on Saturday, 23 February 2019.
This was contained in a statement signed and released by the commissions National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye.
The electoral umpire had initially said that despite the elections postponement, campaigns remain closed, but that decision has been overruled.
The statement read in part:
“After consultations with political parties, the commission has approved that campaigns by parties and candidates can resume forthwith to end by midnight of Thursday, 21st February 2019.”
With this new decision, political parties have an extra 3 days to soften the ground for their parties ahead of the polls.
Responding to the new decision by INEC, both the All Progressives Congress, APC and the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, have both independently agreed to resume campaigns as soon as possible, before the deadline.
