Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Following the elections conducted in February 2023, Tinubu emerged as the president-elect from the All progressive congress (APC). He is the 12th governor of Lagos state, and a Godfather to many.

Chief Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu, is a Nigerian accountant and a politician who has been national leader of the All progressives congress since the party’s formation in 2013. Bola previously served as the governor of Lagos state from 1999 to 2007 and the senator for Lagos west during the brief third republic.

He spent his early life in southwestern Nigeria. Later, he studied accounting in the united states before working abroad for several years. He returned to Nigeria in the mid 1980s to continue working in the financial sector, before following up on politics as a successful Lagos state west senatorial candidate in 1992. He served under the banner of the social democratic party.

The social democratic party was dissolved by dictator Sani Abacha in 1993, Tinubu became an activist campaigning for the return of democracy as a part of the National Democratic Coalition movement. Although he was forced into exile in 1994, Tinubu returned after Abacha’s 1998 death which triggered the beginning of the transition to the Fourth Republic.

In the first post-transition Lagos State gubernatorial election, Tinubu won by a wide margin as a member of the Alliance for Democracy over the Peoples Democratic Party’s Dapo Sarumi and the All People’s Party’s Nosirudeen Kekere-Ekun. Four years later, he won re-election to a second term over the PDP’s Funsho Williams by a reduced margin. Tinubu’s two terms were marked by attempts at modernizing the city of Lagos and his feuds with the PDP-controlled federal government.

After leaving office in 2007, Tinubu retained his status as one of Nigeria’s most influential politicians as his allies often filled high offices throughout the southwest and he played a key role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress in 2013. Tinubu’s History

 

Tinubu was born on the 29th of March 1952 in Lagos state, Nigeria. His mother, Abibatu Mogaji was a trader and she later became the iyaloja of Lagos state.

 

He attended st John’s primary school, Aroloya, Lagos and children’s home school in ibadan, south west of Nigeria.

 

Bola eventually left the country for the united states in 1975, where he studied first at Richard .j. Daley college in Chicago, Illinois, and then at Chicago state university. He later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting.

Tinubu is a Muslim. He is married to Oluremi Tinubu, the current senator of the Lagos central senatorial district. His nephew, Adewale Tinubu is the CEO of Oando. Tinubu’s mother, Abibatu Mogaji, died on the 15th of June 2013, at the age of 96. A more tragic event took place when his son, Jide Tinubu had a heart attack while in London and was later confirmed dead on the 31st of October 2017.

Ahmed holds both the chieftaincy titles of the Asiwaju of Lagos and the Jagaban of borgu kingdom Niger state, Nigeria.

 

Tinubu’s presidential journey

In January 2022, BAT announced his intentions to run for the APC nomination for presidency in Nigeria.

In June 2022, he was announced the winner of the primary elections conducted by the party. Having polled 1,271 votes, thereby defeating the other aspirants in the process. He also made known his running mate for the elections. After long deliberations, he had to meet the deadline of the submission of running mates and so he named Kabiru Masari as his partner.

Tinubu emerged  the president-elect of the federation, after an intense election exercise.
