The hashtag #JusticeforUwa has been trending on twitter and Facebook. Nigerians are yet to get justice for Uwa who was reported to have been raped and killed in a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Edo State where she went to read. According to BBC Pidgin, a spokesperson for the Southern Edo State Police said they were treating the incident as a murder case not rape being that she died following a fight at the church. This he said without further details.

Now, Nigeria is mourning another rape victim, Barakat, who was raped as well and killed at her home in Akinyele, Ibadan, Oyo State on June 1, 2020. The Father of the deceased said that he was not at home at the time, neither was the sister who found Barakat dead at the back of the house, on returning from her Qur’anic lessons.

“I was not at home when the incident happened. The younger sister was not at home too, she went for Qur’anic lessons but when she returned home, she saw her at the back of the house with deep cuts all over her body. She had been raped and killed”.

“Somebody called me on the telephone that I should come home but he refused to tell me what happened. When I got home, I saw that my daughter had been raped and stabbed to death.”

On the other hand, Uwa, it was reported that her family received a call from a woman at the Redeemed Christian Church of God on Wednesday evening to inform them about the incident. It was a security guard that found her and took her to a hospital where she died on Saturday, May 30, 2020, three days after the attack.

According to Judith Omazua, her sister usually goes to the church to read because of the serenity; the church was a stone throw from their home.

Barakat was buried on June 2, 2020 following Islamic rites.
