UN Secretary-General Calls For End To Police Brutality And Abuses

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres said in a statement issued by his Spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric on Wednesday, that he condemns “the violent escalation on 20 October, 2020 at the Lekki toll gate in  Lagos which resulted in multiple deaths and caused many injuries.”

According to the UN News report, Mr. Guterres expressed his condolences to the families bereaved from the shootings, and also wished a speedy recovery to those injured. He called on Nigerian authorities to probe these incidents and bring the perpetrators to book; then
adviced that security forces should always act with, & quote “maximum restraint” while calling on protestors to demonstrate peacefully and to refrain from violence.”
In the statement, Mr. Guterres encouraged the Nigerian authorities to swiftly explore ways to manage the situation and added that the United Nations is ready to support & quote “National efforts towards finding a solution.”
