Surrogacy is gradually gaining grounds and we believe that in less than no time it will become a regular thing, fully accepted in Nigeria just like it is in the Western world. As Folasade Tinubu-Ojo the first daughter of APC chieftain Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, revealed her second baby is a girl and was delivered through a surrogate mother at a naming ceremony.

Although surrogacy has no legal federal backing, binding it in Nigeria, to support its right. However some IVF (intro-Vagina Fertilization) centers can help their clients pick one usually from between the ages of 21- 37.  Blood test, skin color and heritage are considered before choosing a surrogate mother. The finances are usually discussed and agreed upon by the parties involved once the pregnancy is confirmed.

They are two forms of surrogacy, one where the surrogate mother is artificially inseminated with the father’s sperm, and the one where the fertilized embryo is transferred directly into the woman’s womb. The major fear of surrogacy is the question of “will the baby be related to the parents in terms of looks, and characters? Will the bond be there?

Research has shown that once the embryo is transferred, the surrogate mother only acts as a carrier. We can say categorically that technology has been able to put a smile on the faces of so many wives, as it has helped them become mothers, irrespective of their state of health.
