INEC Won’t Give Certificate of Return to These Politicians – INEC Chairman

Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has stated that the commission won’t issue certificate of return to candidates who would be announced winners under duress by INEC in their respective states.

Addressing the inter-agency consultative committee on election security, Yakubu said that the commission will not condone any for of intimidation and compulsion by politicians on its staff to declare them winners.

He said even if the REC’s in the state announce any candidate winner under duress, then certificate of Return will not be issued to such candidates.

In his words:

“I am confident that working together with the security agencies, we will consolidate on the largely peaceful conduct of the presidential and national assembly elections while also taking decisive steps to deal with the minority of violators intent on disrupting the conduct of peaceful elections” .

The INEC chairman also reiterated that the guberantorial and state houses of assembly elections across the 36 states of the federation will begin by 8:00am on Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, Arctic Reporers had earlier reported that seven states, plus the Federal Capital Territory will not witness governorship elections on saturday.
