The RIVERS State Government launched the Covid-19 free bus scheme on Monday, June 1, 2020. The State Commissioner for Transport, Mr Sunny Ejekwu, commended the State Governor, Nyesom Wike for the initiative.
Ejekwu told Citizens of Rivers State this morning being Tuesday June 2, 2020 on WAZOBIA FM Port Harcourt that the reason for this initiative by the Rivers State Governor, was to help convey citizens to their destinations and to curb the spread of the virus; and the buses would operate strictly on the practices of social distancing, using hand sanitizers and wearing of face masks.
The buses would pick and drop passengers only at the designated bus stops and operations will be from 6:30am to 7pm daily.
The Commissioner said that there are secret agents around the bus stops to monitor and ensure that no fare will be collected from people who are boarding the buses.
He told the show host that the buses will ply major roads in the state- likes of Ikwerre road, akpajo and so on.
Ejekwu said that the service will continue until other options arises therefore, citizens should enjoy it while it lasts.
Some people expressed their joy over the launching yesterday whereas, others, mostly taxi drivers did not support this initiative as it would affect their business financially.
